The presence of an abnormal connection (channel) between two organs or two tissue surfaces is called a fistula. An abnormal connection (canal) between the last part of the digestive tract (anus – anal canal) and the skin surrounding the rectum is called anal fistula – rectal fistula or perianal fistula.
Anal fistula (breech fistula – perianal fistula), which is almost always formed as a result of a previous breech abscess, is a passage, a channel that connects the gland where the abscess develops and the skin where the abscess is drained.
